Welcome To Crazy For Cody
scan0007_1.jpgIn late May of 2005, our dear little Cody was diagnosed with "infantile spasms" - a catastrophic epileptic syndrome that typically strikes babies between 4-7 months. He was given a 95% chance of retardation.  He averaged 400 seizures a day for 8 months.  Two days after Christmas of 2005, he became seizure free for 2 months.  Now they're back and we are fighting to re-gain control.  At almost 3 years of age, he is about an 8 month old cognitively and a 12 month old physically.  This site is devoted to Cody and his heroic battle against this horrible syndrome. Will you join us in prayer for our little guy? He's the light of our lives and the most brave person we know. We live a chaotic, often desperate existence these days - but we know that if ANYONE can beat the odds, Cody CAN! Thanks for caring enough to come here and read this. We treasure the support, care and prayers of hundreds of people who stand shoulder to shoulder with us in this fight. We’d love to hear from you – click on “contact us” to send us an email.

"Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am
doing a NEW thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland"
says the Lord. Isaiah 43:18-19

With love and profound thanks,
Shawna, Don, Casey and most of all Cody Graves

Oh my - I just have to share this.  We are cat-sitting this week.  I used to have a cat named Cooper but as Cody got older we realized that Cody + Cat = trouble.  So I was lucky enough to have a good friend who was also Cody's therapist who fell in love with him and offered to give him a new home.  It broke my heart, but we gave him to Wilma in Vancouver.  As luck would have it, whenever Wilma has a trip to go on, we get to Cooper-sit!  Cody's great with him in small doses like this.

Well Cooper has his kitty set up in our kitchen - food dish, water dish, etc.  And Cody has the run of the house now.  Of course I didn't put two and two together - and didn't quite realize that Cody would be walking right past that cat dish.  So - yes - you guessed right - Cody walked to the dish, reached down and grabbed a handfull of cat kibble, and stuck the whole handfull in his mouth and ate away!  This all happened in slow motion for me as I sat across the room at my desk screaming "nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!"  By the time I got to Cody, it was too late to fish the food out of his mouth, it was crumbled up and half-swallowed.  Oh my word, I almost barfed.  I gave him a big cup of water and said "DRINK!"  The worst part?  Cody was unphased - didn't even grimace.  I'm postive given the chance, he'd have grabbed another handfull.  What a crack up.  Needless to say the food needs to be moved elsewhere in the house - somewhere that is Cody-proofed!

We're having fun seeing Cooper again.  I remember when he was my only baby.  How times have changed!

I have good news to report on the sleep-front.  This morning, for the first time, Casey fell back asleep after waking up at 5am!  I left him in his room and scattered toys around - let him cry a bit - let him play a bit - and pretty soon the crying stopped and I peered in to find him asleep.  Meantime, I was able to lay with Cody on his bed and put him back to sleep a few times - ultimately bridging him to sleep till 7am!  And Casey got up at 7:30!  So it was a win/win.  Going for day 2 tomorrow morning.  But boy all the planets have to be in alignment...I have to give Casey a bottle right when he wakes up at 5am and pray he falls back asleep long enough for me to leave the room and crawl next to Cody in his room.  At about 5:30 Casey wakes up again and cries.  Cody does his own share of tossing and turning between 5-6am.  Casey falls back asleep - I get Cody back to sleep - Don goes off to work - and voila - sanity.  I pray it goes as well tomorrow!

Gotta run, it's 10pm and that 5am wake up call comes awfully quick!  Especially when Cody has seizures in the night and we get up to tend to him.

Love to all!

Shawna
