Just had to report our continued run of fun. This morning I was sitting at my computer sending an email and Cody was in his play room. He walked up the steps out of the playroom, around the corner into the kitchen, walked right up to his high chair and pulled the PEC photo off of the high chair (it's attached with velcro) and walked over and handed it to me! It was a PEC for "eat." In other words, CODY COMMUNICATED! At his own initiation with no prompting. It was as empowering as if he had walked right into the kitchen and said, "I'm hungry mom." After he handed me the PEC I said, "Oh........you want to EAT!" So he got immediate gratification. I got out his favorite granola bar and velcroed a PEC of "cereal bar" and a PEC of "crayon" on his high chair tray. He chose "cereal bar" 15 out of 15 times. Even when I switched their places. The idea is to offer him a highly preferred item (bar) and a highly non-preferred item (crayon) so that you can tell for sure he's discriminating. And he was! I switched the PEC of crayon for a PEC of "blocks" and he still chose the bar over and over again. He is doing so darn well I'm having to pinch myself. Just wanted to share. love, shawna |
